Leagues and Tournaments:
The collaboration between FIFA and adidas stretches back over 50 years, solidifying itself as one of the most iconic and enduring relationships in the world of sports marketing. Since 1970, adidas has been the official supplier of the match balls for all FIFA World Cup tournaments. Each year, adidas continues to push the boundaries of technology and design to deliver the perfect ball for the most prestigious football tournament in the world.
Throughout their partnership, adidas has introduced some of the most legendary footballs in history. The Tango (1982) was the first to combine leather and polyurethane. In 1986, the Azteca was unveiled as the first fully synthetic football, followed by the Questra (1994), which featured a polyurethane foam-based design. The Tricolore (1998), introduced a syntactic foam layer, and the +Teamgeist (2006) raised the bar for design, panel technology, and innovation.
These iconic balls have not only been seen at the FIFA World Cup but also at other major FIFA events, such as the FIFA Women’s World Cup, FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2019, and FIFA U-20 and U-17 World Cups for both men and women. Whether it’s for players, officials, referees, or volunteers, adidas provides the official uniform and equipment at these prestigious events.
In November 2013, adidas and FIFA extended their partnership agreement until 2030, cementing their long-term commitment to the FIFA World Cup and all FIFA tournaments. This new contract, announced during a ceremony in Moscow, secured adidas as the Official Partner, Supplier, and Licensee for the FIFA World Cup. The extension provides adidas with broad licensing and marketing rights surrounding the tournament and ensures continued global presence.
As part of this renewed agreement, adidas will continue to supply the Official Match Ball for the FIFA World Cup and provide uniforms for thousands of volunteers across the event. In addition, adidas will continue to produce a wide range of FIFA World Cup licensed products that will be sold globally. The company will also have similar rights for all other FIFA tournaments during this period, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup and FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The partnership between FIFA and adidas is far more than just an event sponsorship. Together, the two organizations share a deep commitment to growing the sport of football worldwide. adidas has been instrumental in helping to develop football in various nations through initiatives such as FIFA Goal and FIFA Football for Hope adidas Exchange Programme. Since 2008, adidas has provided over 150,000 FIFA Goal balls to football federations to assist with grassroots development. Additionally, the Football for Hope programme aims to empower community-based organizations through coaching seminars and workshops, using football as a tool for social development.
