On July 12, 2012, Garuda Indonesia, the national airline of Indonesia, entered into a multi-year partnership with Liverpool Football Club, becoming the official airline partner of the club. This agreement marked a significant step for Garuda as the airline sought to expand its global brand presence, especially within football’s passionate fanbase. This partnership enabled Garuda to tap into Liverpool FC’s massive international following and engage with fans around the world.
With over 1.5 million fans in Indonesia alone, Garuda Indonesia recognized the power of Liverpool’s global brand and its massive influence in Asia. The airline capitalized on this partnership by offering exclusive experiences for fans, including the launch of the ‘Garuda Indonesia and Liverpool Experience’ in Jakarta in February 2013. This interactive event allowed fans to engage with the club’s rich history through immersive experiences, including life-sized player cut-outs, a unique Anfield photo booth, and live screenings of LFC TV. The initiative helped strengthen Garuda’s connection with its loyal customer base while bringing fans closer to the club.
In January 2014, Garuda Indonesia extended its partnership with Liverpool FC by becoming the club’s first-ever official training kit partner. This partnership was a direct result of the success of Liverpool’s pre-season tour to Asia and Australia in 2013, during which Garuda’s involvement was highly visible. The airline’s branding was featured prominently on Liverpool’s training kits, creating additional visibility for both brands.
The partnership also coincided with Garuda Indonesia’s commitment to expand its global network, with the airline now operating direct flights from Indonesia to Europe, strengthening its international reach and presence in key markets.
Throughout their partnership, Garuda and Liverpool FC engaged fans through numerous unique and interactive campaigns. One of the highlights was the “soccer clinic” organized by Liverpool FC legends like Luis Garcia and Didi Hamann in Jakarta, where young fans had the opportunity to receive coaching from their heroes. The event helped promote the Gocekz Project, a social initiative that uses football to support children in disadvantaged communities. These community-focused activities helped enhance the bond between the club, the airline, and their supporters.
In addition to community engagement, Garuda Indonesia offered special competitions for fans, such as the chance to win signed merchandise and tickets to Anfield. The airline also provided a unique opportunity to quiz Anfield legend Ian Rush during the celebration of Garuda’s inaugural flight to the UK in September 2014.
