The ties between Everton FC and Hill Dickinson run deep, with a shared history that traces back to the very origins of the club. One of the key figures in Everton’s early days, Will Cuff, played a significant role in the club’s foundation in 1878. Initially formed as a team for the St Domingo’s Church community, Cuff was one of the original trustees and later served as Secretary, Chairman, and President of the club. His contributions to the development of Everton FC are still celebrated today, making him one of the most influential figures in the club’s history.
Outside of football, Will Cuff co-founded Cuff Roberts, a law firm in Liverpool, which later became synonymous with trusted legal services in the city. In 2010, Hill Dickinson acquired Cuff Roberts, bringing its legacy into the modern era and further solidifying the connection between the law firm and Everton FC. Even now, several former partners from Cuff Roberts continue to work at Hill Dickinson, preserving the values that have been passed down through the generations.
The partnership between Everton and Hill Dickinson marks not only a financial collaboration but also a celebration of shared values. The Cuff family, who are descendants of Will Cuff, continue to support the club from Australia. Henry Charles Cuff, the grandson of Will Cuff, expressed his pride in the continuation of his family’s legacy through this partnership. He noted, “This partnership with Hill Dickinson honors my grandfather’s contributions to both Everton FC and the legal profession. It is a fitting tribute to his enduring impact on the city, the club, and the principles he stood for.”
The recent visit of great-granddaughter Judith Cuff and great-great-grandchildren Julia Pleiter and Charles Pleiter from Australia to Goodison Park for a Premier League match against Arsenal further exemplified the ongoing family commitment to Everton, proving the continued bond between the Cuff family and the club.
As Everton’s Men’s Senior Team transitions to Hill Dickinson Stadium on the banks of the River Mersey, the partnership between the club and the law firm is a powerful symbol of continuity. Hill Dickinson’s name will soon be visible at the club’s new home, a reminder of the Cuff family’s enduring legacy and influence on both the club and the legal profession.
Ken Rogers, Chair of the Everton FC Heritage Society, shared: “Will Cuff’s contribution to Everton can’t be overstated. He helped shape the club’s values and identity — values that live on today. It is fitting that a firm with ties to him now becomes the naming rights partner for our new stadium.”
With this partnership, Everton FC not only celebrates its proud history but also moves into the future, building on a foundation of shared values and community pride. This century-old connection will now be immortalized, etched into the skyline of North Liverpool and visible to millions.
